Above everything else, I am an east coast skier.

Tuesday, February 28, 2006  > Trackback URL
I've been doing a ton of thinking while out here in Colorado. I've been out here for just about a month now, without a doubt, the skiing is 10x better here. The mountains are higher, the snow is deeper, the crowds are thinner and it is all together a completely different sport. However, I wouldn't change a single thing on how I got out here. I'm very proud of my east coast upbringing, the resorts I frequented, the skiing friends I've made, the resorts I've worked for, the countless hours of driving spent in my Subaru during college and the zillions of hours I've spent in premiere, photoshop or dreamweaver making pages to inform everyone to the movement that everyone has worked so hard to create.

What makes this even sweeter is that I did this all on my own accord. Nobody helped me. My (higher) education and my upbringing had nothing to do with my success. This (new) life is 100% as a result of my actions in the ski industry. Sure, the college education helps, but at the end of the day Assumption did absolutely nothing to get me where I am today... Other than the school's convenient geographic location to skiing. I taught myself html, css, php, mysql, photoshop, dreamweaver and photography. I'm the one that was checking out books from the library on subjects that weren't in my current "curriculum", I was experimenting with my own personal websites and getting internships at ski resorts. I'm sure that the concepts I absorbed in the 4.5 year's I attended Assumption helped, but in the end... I made this happen and it is a great feeling. It just sucks that our society pretty much mandates a college education and that my parents had to endure the economic hardship of putting me through some sort of institutionalized education system for 4+ years. I'll always be super grateful for all they have done to further my education. I just hope they one day understand all the work that I've invested into getting where I am today.

Well, back to the nostalgia... I'd pretty much kill to ride Mount Snow, Wachusett or Sunday River right now. Not because the parks are that sick, or that they've got the best stuff around... I'd like to go back because that's where I'm from. I can ride those parks, look around and know at least a dozen other regulars there. It is where I feel at home. Everyone has their "home turf", and for me, that place is back east... Probably at the River. No place will, or has been as ever been so good to me as Sunday River will ever be.

Sure, I'm in a "better" place now. Just know that every time I hike to some sick bowl, drop a pow-filled tree line or hit an x-games jump, I'll know that I owe everything to the east coast and the people that helped me get to where I am right now.

What is the weather like out there?

Monday, February 27, 2006  > Trackback URL
So, whenever I talk to people from home they are always asking me what the weather is like out here. Since I'm in Colorado they assume that it is cold as balls and that it does nothing but snow. On the contrary, idiots. We get 300 rediculous days of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. When we have a "partly sunny" day, it is because there is a single cloud in the sky. A "partly cloudy" day means that the sun will occasionally go behind a cloud for a few minutes during the day. It is really freaky to see the sun this much.

So, without further adeu here is a comparison of this week's Boston weather to Denver's.

Hey look, nothing but cold temperatues and shit weather in Boston. Man, I really miss home. Bitter cold temps, no sun, rain and snow mix. Sweet.

Ohh, look what we have here in Boulder. Almost 75 degrees and sunny. Oh jeez, look at the end of the week... It gets "colder" at 53 degrees. Ha ha ha ha. Oh yeah, 45 minutes away, in the mountains, it is snowing and wintery. It is great. Winter up there, comfortable temperatures down here.

Where has Dave been?

 > Trackback URL
I know what some of you are asking yourselves... Where has Dave been recently? What is up with the overall lack of posts? Well, my friends, I have been in Aspen. Rough, I know. My phone has been acting up recently and hasn't been publishing any of my mobile imges. Once I settle down tonight I'll be posting a ton of pictures from my recent shenanigans.

Ohh yeah, forgot to mention that I'll be flying into Boston on Friday morning at 5:00 AM. More details on that to come.

I forgot to show everyone this wonderful picture of Cait and I from Keystone last weekend. Cait was up there shredding the gnar. I was also in the area writing a story on their terrain park so we meet up for the weekend. Good times. Special thanks to Amanda for hookin' up the sweet ass pink polka dot Anon gogs for Cait. She felt super steezey in them... Probably not as steezey as someone decked out in a fur collared white camo jacket, but never the less, pretty steezey.

Skiing Loveland Pass.

Thursday, February 23, 2006  > Trackback URL
Did I mention how much this job rocks? A couple of other Freeskier staffers and I left at 7:00 AM this morning to go ski Loveland Pass. Nothing but boot high powder and blue sky. It was great, wetook turns driving eachother to the top of the pass and skiing down. Made it back into the office for 11:00 AM. How sweet is that!?

The altitude is still kicking my ass, hopefully I'll get adjusted to it quickly. I'd like to start hiking at A-Basin to get some gnarly runs in.

Headed to Aspen for the weekend!

Anonymous Anonymous : I had a similar adventure except I was doing GS turns on the Mass Pike on my way into Boston.

Aspen again? It must be tiring for you.

Dave

Anonymous Anonymous : Yo, loveland pass isn't like skiing down the pike man.

Back In Action

Tuesday, February 21, 2006  > Trackback URL
Ok, so this past weekend I was riding the A51 terrain park at Keystone. It was my first weekend back jibbing after taking last season off due to injury. I must say, I was very surprised that I still had it goin' on. I was sticking clean 360's, 540's and somehow managed to land a 720. It must be from all the trampolining I did in the off-season back in Rhode Island with Amanda. What sucked was that I tried to cork out a 720 and took a nice hip/ass digger on the second jump in the park. I don't know what the hell I was thinking, but it was nice to know that I still suck. Ha.

So, here's a picture of the line of jumps I was sessioning all weekend.

Additional photos and words by me can be found at freeskier.com

Anonymous Anonymous : So sick, oh yes that line of jumps looks so sick

Office Meeting

Saturday, February 18, 2006  > Trackback URL
After a long day of getting chauffeured around a Summit County resort that will remain nameless and checking out some awesome terrain it was time to go relax and have a little meeting with their PR Manager, Terrain Park Manager and Online Marketing Manager... Where did this meeting take place? At the bar, of course.

Things got a bit out of control when the shots of Cuervo started to come out, but what the hell. I'm making new friends and solidifying existing business relationships.

Pass the salt.

The Bern Helmet.

Friday, February 17, 2006  > Trackback URL
This is going to be the next big thing in ski helmets. This is one of the new Bern helmets. They're different, more comfortable, multi use and look kickass.

I look forward to testing it out this weekend at Keystone. I'll be hucking myself all over the terrain park and this baby should come in handy when I start planting my skullet onto some landings.

Anonymous Anonymous : Very equestrian...you can ride a pony with that.

Anonymous Anonymous : ahahahahahaha

Anonymous Anonymous : that helmet looks sick!! I think that's the same one that Seth Wescott won the gold in....YAAAA!!!

Anonymous Anonymous : Where can I buy helmets like this in large numbers?? I have my own business driving a short bus full of special needs kids. These kids don't have much but I know they would love to be wearing helmets like these while I am driving them to school. Please post ordering information... Thanks you!

Here's how you make sure your friends get absolutly no action at the bar.
  1. Locate some sort of writing device. In a pinch, a woman's lipstick will due.
  2. Find a cocktail napkin.
  3. Write something offensive on the cocktail napkin.
  4. Obtain some sort of adhesive. Tape, glue... Gum can be used in a pinch. Do not use staplers, they are too painful and obvious to your target.
  5. Adhere note to person's back, laugh for hours. Watch them get rejected by everyone at the bar.

Happy single awareness day everyone! You know what, I'm glad that I am single right now. I don't have the time or energy for a relationship. I just moved here! Now a hookup, that's a completely different scenario. Ha.

So, with hopes to option two, Ryan and I are headed out on the town tonight to some bar throwing an Anti-Valentines Day party. We'll see how this goes. Hopefully it isn't just some place filled to the brim with uggos who couldn't find a date if they were the last member of the opposites sex on the planet.

Anthony: be sure to get drunk enough where you dont care who you bring home
Anthony: then your guarenteed to have a good night
Dave: don't want to come home with a lagoon creature
Anthony: just make sure she has all her limbs..no amount of booze changes a hook to a hand

Wow, our site has been down for almost two days now. Major issues with the server. Matt is working so hard I think steam is coming out of his ears. So, in between geek sessions I am making an MMP post.

I'm headed to Aspen this Friday morning for the long weekend to cover the Aspen-Snowmass Open. I can't wait to get up there. The only place I have been skiing in Colorado is Copper, and from what people are telling me, Aspen makes Copper look like a steaming pile of doberman shit.

Expect some mobile posts from my travels this wknd. Until then, it is back to work helping Matt in any way, shape, or form that I can. Late.

So, how's it going?

Just in case you were wondering, I am loving it out here.
Boulder is a really cool place. Everything is brand new, the sun is always shining, the air is clean, the people are friendly, just about everything is affordable and my job fucking rocks. The only thing that could make it better out here is if all my friends and family from home decided to pack up and move out here. It has only been 4 days, but I am pretty confident when I say that it was the best decision of my life to move out here.

I'm starting to get settled in at work and home this week. Stay tuned for some decent (non cameraphone) picture updates with some cool stories.

Ohh yeah, by "flexible hours" they mean that you'll be spread eagle over a stage shaking your moneymaker to Def Leoppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" while skeezy guys who couldn't get dates if they were the last dick on the planet blow their weekly minimum wage paychecks with hopes that something physical will materialize between the two of you.

Welcome to Colorado, Dave.

Just hit the Colorado border coming out of Nebraska. Only around 200 miles to Boulder! Looks like it is going to be smooth sailing, 75mph speed limit and a little bit of wind coming off the plains.

Nebraska is really this flat.

 > Trackback URL
Yes, Nebraska is really this flat. At least the speed limit is 75, so that means you can easily do 85 like everyone else and make some awesome time. Many people say that Nebraska is one of the hardest states to drive on the trip out west because it is so boring... I think it was one of the best. You can fly, there isn't anyone on the road and the driving is incredibly simple. I think I drove with my knee on the steering wheel for 250 miles today. It was great.

Don't get me wrong, if I ever lived in this god forsaken state I would have hung myself by the age of 8.
