Who express mails a 25 pound weed ball?!??!
PUTNAM-- Police seized a 25-pound ball of marijuana worth more than $140,000 during a raid at a Pomfret Street apartment Wednesday afternoon.
Two men were arrested in the 2:30 p.m. raid at 114 Pomfret St. Apt. 1, conducted by the Statewide Narcotics Task Force -- East Office; Troop D Quality of Life Task Force; the U.S. Postal Inspection Service; and Putnam Police after an investigation.
Law enforcement agents started tracking the marijuana ball after the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Arizona discovered the ball in a package being shipped to Putnam through Express U.S. Mail.
The ball then was shipped to Putnam under the control of law enforcement, U.S. Postal Inspector Thomas Lambert Jr. said.
"We have certain profiles we look for with packages, which I can't identify," Lambert said. "However, our goal is to rid U.S. mail of illegal narcotics."
Lt. Michael Darcy, area commander for the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, called the drug bust unique to the area.
"This is certainly a significant seizure and arrest," he said.
As a result of the raid, Kenneth P. Gould Jr., 27, of 504 River Road in Putnam was charged with possession of more than 1 kilogram of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a drug factory, possession of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school and witness intimidation.
Gould is being held on $750,000 bond and is scheduled to appear today in Danielson Superior Court.
Bernard Burgess, 28, of 54 Mashmoquet Road in Pomfret was charged with possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana and was held on $2,500 non-surety bond. He is scheduled to appear March 14 in Danielson Superior Court.
Darcy said the search included a motor vehicle outside the apartment. The charges against Burgess stemmed from him possessing a small amount of marijuana while he was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Gould, Darcy said.
Darcy said the search of the vehicle also turned up smaller amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, including a scale and $1,000 in cash.
He credited all the agencies working together for the success of the raid.
"It was a team effort," he said. "We all do a good job working with each other."
